Abstract

This study explores the features of Dr. Mahmoud Tawfiq Saad’s – may God have mercy on him – interpretive rhetorical approach, which stands as a unique model for understanding the Qur’an. It combines the precision of rhetorical insight with the depth of the maqasid (purposes) perspective. The late scholar transcended superficial stylistic views to reach a comprehensive interpretive horizon that links Qur’anic rhetoric with the overarching objectives of Islamic law. He elucidates the spiritual and educational dimensions of the purification of the soul, making Qur’anic rhetoric a tool for understanding divine guidance and a means to revive the believer’s spiritual and emotional awareness.
The study also highlights Dr. Saad’s view of Arabic rhetoric as a tool that surpasses mere linguistic techniques and stylistic methods to become an integrated cognitive and spiritual system. This system opens the way to explore divine wisdom and guides the reader to contemplate the Qur’an within a comprehensive, systematic framework, where language harmonizes with meaning, and structures align with the overall purposes of Qur’anic discourse.
The research further reveals the importance of integrating rhetorical intellect with foundational (usul) intellect in understanding the Qur’anic text. This integration plays a crucial role in establishing a precise balance between the majesty of divinity and the beauty of lordship, thereby enhancing the Qur’anic discourse’s educational function in refining and elevating the self. The study also sheds light on the concept of “functional correspondence” as an interpretive approach unveiling the harmony and cohesion among the Qur’anic chapters,
