Abstract

Research Objectives: This study aims to examine Dr. Muhammad Abed al-Jabri’s methodology in interpreting the Qur'an, analyzing and critiquing it based on the beliefs of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah. The research also seeks to refute some of his claims regarding Qur'anic interpretation.
Research Methodology: The research follows an inductive, analytical, and critical approach. It relies on reviewing Dr. al-Jabri’s books and analyzing his methodology, followed by a critique from the perspective of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.
Findings: Dr. al-Jabri’s hermeneutical approach to the Qur’an rests on two principal tools:
• The modernist reading of the Qur’anic text.
• The historical critical method influenced by Orientalist studies.
Additionally, he employed Cartesian doubt to challenge the divine preservation of the Qur’an and the infallibility of the Prophets, and he advocated for a reordering of the Qur’anic chapters according to Western criteria—an approach that raises serious questions about the integrity of the traditionally transmitted text.
Originality of the Research: This research stands out as a doctrinally focused study that specifically critiques Dr. al-Jabri’s methodology in interpreting the Qur'an. It offers an objective critique that addresses the intellectual deviations affecting Islamic knowledge sources.Additionally, he employed Cartesian doubt to challenge the divine preservation of the Qur’an and the infallibility of the Prophets, and he advocated for a reordering of the Qur’anic chapters according to Western criteria—an approach that raises serious questions about the integrity of the traditionally transmitted text.
