Abstract
The grammarians made great efforts to establish grammatical rules based on consistent principles. However, there are texts from the Arabs that contradict the rules they established. In response, the grammarians resorted to interpreting these texts to align them with grammatical principles. An example of this is their explanation for the accusative case of al-jama’ al-ghafeer (the large crowd) as a circumstantial accusative, despite it being defined with the definite article al- (the). They justified this by assuming it to be implicitly indefinite, meaning they interpreted it as if it were a noun in an indefinite form. While its apparent form contradicts the rules, they adjusted its interpretation to conform with grammatical principles. The grammarians recognized early on the importance of interpretation and the effect of implied intention (niyah) on syntax, as well as on establishing grammatical rules and principles. They paid special attention to the implied, treating it as if it were explicitly present in speech. For them, niyah was a mental conceptualization of the presence of something. This approach led to multiple syntactical interpretations of a single issue depending on the intended meaning. For example, when the verb dhanna (to think) is delayed or positioned between its two objects, it could either govern the sentence if doubt (shakk) is intended or be neglected if certainty (yaqeen) is intended.
