Abstract

Arabic Language heritage is a pure spring for those who are thirsty for cognition to drink, and sweet river for all those who seek the useful knowledge. Our ancient genius scientists who established this heritage are still in the lead in many fields of linguistics and even other branches of knowledge. The emergence of the study of phonetics is practically related to Holy Quran since its revelation to prophet Mohamed, peace be upon him. However, the real emergence of the theoretical part of the field was at the hands of Al Khalil Bin Ahmed and that is why he became the real founder of Arabic phonetics. The preface of his lexicon "Al Ain" discussed many phonetic cases that established the phonetic science. Hence, comes the importance of the preface for phonetics students. Therefore, it would be useful to give more attention to the preface to extract the phonetic cases discussed by Al Khalil Bin Ahmed to highlight its scientific value as it is the base of this field. Here is the cases that are extracted from the preface and discussed in this study:
Arabic alphabetical order, number of letters, vocal ranges, speech organs, pronunciation and comprehension of phonetic sounds, articulators, distribution of letters to articulators, characteristics of letters.
